THE PROGRADE SYSTEM -- STARTUP INSTRUCTIONS
VER 4.3
The PROGRADE SYSTEM is a full-featured grading program for
educators. It was designed by an educator and has been rigorously
tested by "non-computer expert" educators to meet their specific
needs. A full description of the capabilities of the program are
found in the user's manual (PROGRADE.TXT) on the utility disk.
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS FILE TO SET UP THE PROGRAM!
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: DOS 2.1 or higher, 384 K, 2 drives and
a printer are recommended; program is hard drive ready
DISKS: There are two disks. Do NOT combine disks, as both
separate disks are required. A blank formatted disk is required
for your own data. If you have the same size disks you may
duplicate the disks with DISKCOPY. Do NOT write protect the
disks, as the program writes to each disk. If you have different
disk sizes, you can use the XCOPY command with /S option to
duplicate the disks to preformatted disks. You are not required
to duplicate the disks to use them, however.
MANUALS: There are TWO manuals to print from the UTILITY disk.
The FIRST is the HANDS-ON TUTORIAL (TUTORIAL.TXT). It will guide
you through each step of the system, step by step. The second is
a REFERENCE USER'S MANUAL (PROGRADE.TXT) to be used AFTER you
have used the TUTORIAL. The next paragraph explains how to print
the tutorial and the manual.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
STARTUP
To learn to use the PROGRADE SYSTEM, insert the PROGRAM disk in drive
A, and type BEGIN. From there, you can print the TUTORIAL. Then, USE
THE TUTORIAL to guide you step by step through the program series.
THIS WILL TEACH YOU NOT ONLY HOW TO USE THE SYSTEM, BUT WHAT IT'S
POWERFUL CAPABILITIES ARE.
1. All users users should use the BEGIN program to print the tutorial
first, then leave the BEGIN program and use the tutorial as you read
it.
2. After using the tutorial, hard drive users should install the
program (see below).
3. Once you have used the tutorial (and installed the program if a
hard drive user), then you should return to the BEGIN program to set
user options.
PLEASE!
DO NOT USE OR INSTALL THE PROGRADE SYSTEM UNTIL YOU HAVE PRINTED
AND USED THE TUTORIAL.
The REFERENCE USER'S MANUAL can also be printed from the BEGIN
program. You will receive a blue printed copy of this manual
with your registration and request for an updated version. That
is why you will see occasional reference to the BLUE PRINTED
MANUAL -- it is the REFERENCE USER'S MANUAL.
ERROR CODES: A list is found in the tutorial and in the user's
manual as well.
------------------------------------------------------------------
HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION
Most hard drive users use drive C. If you do, then to install the
program on the hard drive, insert the program disk in drive A and type
HARD <return> Follow the instructions that you will see. BE SURE TO
USE THE TUTORIAL BEFORE YOU INSTALL TO THE HARD DRIVE.
If you are reinstalling the program, you may see some error codes
appear on screen. These are only because your subdirectory already
exists on your hard drive. You may ignore these messages.
OPTIONAL HARD DRIVE SETUP: IF YOU USE ANOTHER LETTER FOR YOUR
HARD DRIVE (SUCH AS DRIVE F), THEN BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE
PROGRAM, PLACE THE PROGRAM DISK IN DRIVE A AND TYPE BEGIN AND
CHOOSE "HARD DRIVE LETTER". THIS PROCEDURE WILL ALTER THE HARD
DRIVE LETTER THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM SERIES. AFTER THIS IS
COMPLETED, LEAVE THE BEGIN PROGRAM, AND THEN TYPE HARD <return>
TO BEGIN THE INSTALLATION PROCESS TO THE CORRECT DRIVE.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
FILES ON THE UTILITY DISK
There are sample grade files on the utility disk. The tutorial
will show you how to use them. Also found on the utility disk
are the manuals referred to above.
There are several additional information files on the utility
disk. Use a word processor or the DOS TYPE command to view:
AUTHOR.TXT which will give you some ideas about using the
PROGRADE SYSTEM positively in the classroom, QUOTES.TXT which
contains some positive, motivating quotes, and COMMENTS.TXT which
contains ideas for comments to use on your progress reports.
A complete list of all files on the disks is contained in the
file named FILES found on the utility disk. You can look at it
with a word processor or the DOS TYPE command.
THANK YOU FOR USING THE PROGRADE SYSTEM!
THE AUTHOR REQUESTS A $45 FEE FOR USE OF THE PROGRAM.
PLEASE BE FAIR AND CONSIDER THE AUTHOR.
If you use the PROGRADE SYSTEM for long, you will notice
several things. First of all, your students may show an
improvement in their performance because of the prompt feedback
that the SYSTEM can provide. Parents may praise you for the
thorough reports that you can give. And your family and friends
will rejoice -- no more end of the term "grading" -- it's
always done and up to date with little effort.
Please -- the author worked long and hard writing and having this
program field tested. He is an educator like yourself, and is
asking for your help. Send what you can; it will be truly
appreciated.
Please -- it is a violation of copyright law to use this program
without registering. And even more-- it's just not fair to the
author. Think about how much benefit YOU get weekly from this
program! Registered users who update their program will receive
professionally packaged software, diskette case, printed manual,
and most recent program versions automatically sent. In
addition, registered users can earn a $10 finder's fee by
convincing any other user to register also. Simply send us
a note containing YOUR name and address as well as the name and
address of the new user registered within the last 30
days. We will then pay you directly.
PLEASE USE THE ORDER/REGISTRATION FORM IN THE BEGIN PROGRAM TO
PROPERLY REGISTER OR TO OBTAIN UPDATED VERSIONS.
Thank you from the author,
